Diabetic Retinopathy can lead to visual impairment.
There is approximately 415 million people in the world diagnosed with diabetes (circa 10% of world's population) and this number is expected to increase to 642 million by 2040.
Close to 30% of patients with diabetes have some form of diabetic retinopathy and 10% with sight threatening of diabetic retinopathy.
It is imperative to have your annual diabetic retinopathy screening and see your retina specialist at regular intervals to monitor your retina for prompt treatment where necessary.

Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
Here, new vessels at the retina or the optic disc develop due to ischemia of the retina. Usually, pan retina photocoagulation or antivegf will be required. Ms Heng will advise on treatment and monitor outcomes at regular intervals
Diabetic Maculopathy
Maculopathy refers to the fluid build up in the macular which sometimes causes visual impairment or distortion. Depending on the site of oedema, ether macular laser or a course of antivegf therapy may be recommended.
